The GIIS Cup celebrates the cricketing passion and talent by conduction a series of matches under various age groups. The 2009 GIIS Cup is inspired by and dedicated to Mr Chandu Borde, cricket legend, former India cricket team Captain and GSF Vice President. A highlight of the GIIS Cup is the participation of overseas cricket teams from GIIS schools and non-GIIS schools.
The success of the GIIS Cup can be attributed to GIIS Cup Co-ordinator, Mr Grant Stanley and GIIS cricket coach, Mr Deep Patel, under the dynamic leadership of Mr Maneesh Tripathi. They have stood resolutely through nail-biting decisions, weather-binding days and referee-minding matches to see a successful run of all GIIS Cup matches. The inaugural match of the popular GIIS Cup was graced by acclaimed Australian test cricketer Trevor Chappell, brother of Ian Chappell and Greg Chappell- all cricketing greats.
As cricket gains a strong following in Singapore, many international and Singapore schools have cricket teams playing the game at a competitive level. Cricket is one of the sports under the GIIS Gold Squad programme where students excelling in the game train regularly under the supervision of the GIIS Cricket Coach. The young cricketers attend training workshops and play cricket matches at a school level before moving on to inter-school tournaments. During workshops they learn to develop team spirit and hone their cricketing skills.
Several GIIS students from GIIS Queenstown and GIIS East Coast campuses have been selected to represent Singapore’s national cricket team in U-13, U-14, U-16 and U-19 age categories. GIIS cricket teams have not just played but won Singapore’s institutional cricket league tournaments.
GSF congratulates all the budding cricketers who have participated in GIIS Cup and wishes them a great cricketing career ahead! GIIS Cup celebrates the amazing cricketing season in Singapore with competitive matches played under an unrelenting sun by talented cricket heroes and new records created. |
