Integration is one of GIIS’ greatest ideals. With an aim to sensitise its students and make them appreciative of various cultures, the school hosts an annual carnival that is known for its vibrancy and energy-levels. The Spirit of Asia – Carnival for Integration invites students, their family and friends, local schools, eminent dignitaries, the lesser privileged (from old age homes, etc) and the general public to come and celebrate the spirit of communal harmony. This is to ensure that our students understand and appreciate the different heritages better. The event showcases vibrant cultural dance performances from across Asia, mouth-watering cuisines and several competitions that inform about the cultural heritage or history. |

Global Indian International School has been hosting the Spirit of India – Carnival for Integration since three years. Every year the Carnival attracts up to 3,000 visitors from all walks of life. Extending the spirit of communal harmony, GIIS invites members from the neighbourhood, GIIS students, and Indians in Singapore. The carnival usually takes place in mid- August at the GIIS Queenstown Campus. The fest not only has all GIIS students involved, but it also invites several local schools to be part of this celebration. The event broadly includes a list of cultural performances from across schools, games and competitions, along with food and refreshments.
During this festival the entire GIIS campus transforms into one giant carnival. Held to celebrate Singapore’s multi-cultural diversity and to commemorate India’s Independence Day, the GIIS Spirit of Asia – Carnival for Integration is a much anticipated event. Several fun activities games, stalls, competitive dance performances, songs by the Global Indian Star winners and lip-smacking food provide a variety of entertainment for all this carnival. Dances by Chinese and Malay performers, lend a colourful dimension to the multi-cultural theme, and is greatly appreciated by the audience. The presence of neighbourhood residents from the Queenstown Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and special visitors from the Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home, Lion Befriender Old Home, etc gives the theme of integration an added significance.
In 2011, the Independence Day of India will be celebrated with a festival that salutes the spirit of cultural harmony that Singapore proudly represents, called Spirit of Asia- Carnival for Integration 2011. The highlight for this year’s event was the creation of a Chinese lantern with 2800+ handprints. This special lantern is being crafted by GIIS in order to make a place for it in the prestigious Singapore Book of Records. On 14th August, the carnival day, after the final touches from the guest of honour, the lantern will be lit to exhibit its functional beauty. Every year at GIIS, the Indian Independence Day celebrations ignite a spirit of social integration. A fine reflection of this zest is seen at the GIIS carnival, where the entire GIIS fraternity participates with their family members.
